CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE GUIDELINES

This document is intended to provide Central High School students with information needed to successfully complete the community service requirements for the 2006-07 school year.

QUALIFYING COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES:

Eligible activities include those performed at non-profit organizations or businesses. The term "non-profit" does not relate to whether or not the student is paid for activities performed. Students should ask organizations or business if they are a nonprofit prior to performing activities. As a general rule, activities performed at places such as libraries, elementary schools, Meals on Wheels, hospices, Habitat for Humanity, and faith-based organizations are acceptable. Please keep in mind; a doctor's office or physical therapy facility is not a nonprofit business. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that hours are properly logged by the organization.

EXCEPTIONS:

Activities performed at faith-based organizations such as synagogue, churches or mosques will be counted towards the community service requirement as long as the activities are not religious in nature. For example, activities performed at an after school program housed at a church will count, assisting in worship service or Bible Study does not.

RECORD KEEPING:

It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that hours are properly logged by the organization. Students will turn letters in to their respective class sponsors. Letters are due to class sponsors by March 9, 2007.

Grading:

Community service grades will be awarded based upon the number of hours completed.

45 or more A 90

44 to 35 B 80

34 to 30 C 70

29 or less F 60

On the first and second marking periods, all students will receive "W" unless they have completed 45 or more hours in which case they will receive an "A"

On the third marking period, students will receive a "Y" or "N" to indicate completion of community service hours (This is subject to change).

On the fourth marking period, all students will receive the grade they have earned based on the number of hours they have accumulated to the point. (No "W"s)

Once a student has earned an "A", they should have an "A" on every report for the rest of the school year.

IF YOU ARE UNCERTAIN WHETHER OR NOT A PARTICULAR ACTIVITY WILL COUNT-ASK MR. WILSON (Room 302).
